Hey everyone, I know this sounds crazy, but I’m literally at my wits’ end here.
I live in a busy high-rise downtown. My apartment is pretty small but it’s split into two levels. My modem/router setup is in the corner of the living room. Here is the kicker: my sofa is literally a few feet away, and the connection is still super flaky there. The bathroom isn’t even that far, but I get zero bars. And my bedroom is downstairs, almost directly underneath the router, and half the time it’s a total dead zone.
I’ve already burned through a few different routers. The one I have now is the best so far, but it still sucks. Whenever I open my WiFi list, it’s just an absolute wall of networks from my neighbors. Sometimes my own network isn’t even at the top of the list!
Look, I know WiFi jammers are highly illegal and I am NOT trying to go down that road. But is there any legit way to just block outside signals from getting into my apartment? Like, is there some kind of special wallpaper, paint, or drywall material that acts like a shield against the neighbors but lets my own WiFi work inside? Or am I completely overthinking this and looking at it all wrong? Any advice would save my sanity.
You’re thinking about it wrong, but in a very common way. You don’t want to “block all signals except yours”. That’s not really how this works in a normal apartment. Anything that blocks your neighbors’ WiFi will probably block yours too, or reflect it around and make your own signal worse. What you want is to figure out whether your WiFi is weak, on a bad channel, stuck on 2.4 GHz, badly placed, or being drowned out by stronger nearby networks. Don’t start with foil. Start with a WiFi analyzer.
Please don’t turn your apartment into a discount Faraday cage. Install NetSpot on your Android and check the Channels view. It can show nearby networks, what channels they’re on, signal levels, and it also gives channel recommendations. That’s exactly the kind of thing you need before changing router settings. If your router is only using 2.4 GHz and you’re in a dense building, that’s probably part of the pain. 2.4 travels far, which means you hear everyone and everyone hears you.
Where exactly is the router? On the floor? In a cabinet? Behind a TV? Near electrical panels, pipes, metal shelves?
@Autumnseason It’s on a small shelf in the corner, close to the wall. I also put a small piece of foil behind it because I thought maybe it would push the signal into the apartment.
Remove the foil before doing any serious testing. Maybe it helped by accident, maybe it’s reflecting your own signal and creating more weird multipath. WiFi is already bouncing around walls, floors, pipes, appliances, etc. Adding random metal behind the router is not a controlled antenna design, it’s arts and crafts RF.Put the router higher, in the open, away from metal, then scan again with NetSpot from the sofa, bathroom, and bedroom. Compare signal level in each spot.
