My parents got new neighbors a few weeks ago and the guy apparently installed cameras, sensors, smart doorbells, the whole deal. My mom says there are cameras basically all around the house.
Could be coincidence, but since then their WiFi has been awful. Streaming buffers randomly, FaceTime freezes, sometimes pages just hang for a few seconds and then load.
Router is less than 6 months old and was totally fine before this.
Is it actually possible all his wireless stuff is screwing with their WiFi or am I blaming the wrong guy?
Possible, but don’t assume it’s his security system specifically. First thing I’d check is what WiFi channels are being used around the house. If his new AP/cameras are on WiFi and they’re sitting on the same or overlapping channels as your parents, that could absolutely make an already busy band worse. Especially 2.4 GHz.
@user_Jacob_J I’m not very technical lol. How do I actually see that? Router is currently just set to Auto for everything.
Run NetSpot or another WiFi scanner and look at the networks around you + what channels they’re using. I’d do it near your parents’ router and again on the side of the house facing the neighbor. If you see your network sitting on a packed channel with a bunch of strong neighboring networks, log into the router and move it to a cleaner one. On 2.4 GHz, stick with 1, 6 or 11 rather than picking some random channel in between. And if their TV/phones support 5 GHz, I’d get those off 2.4 anyway.
