We recently moved into a new apartment and the WiFi is driving me crazy.
The FritzBox is in the living room. Signal is okay in the kitchen and bedroom, but the bathroom is basically a dead zone and the balcony is almost unusable. I added a repeater in the office, which fixed the office, but the bathroom still drops WiFi completely and the phone has to reconnect again.
The balcony is a metal structure attached to the outside of the building. Could that mess with the signal? Also, the FritzBox is around 8 years old. Does WiFi performance get worse with age, or would a new router actually help here?
Your repeater is probably in the wrong place. A repeater doesn’t create good Wi-Fi out of sadness and hope. It repeats whatever it receives. If it already gets a weak signal in the office, then it’s just forwarding weak Wi-Fi with extra steps. Try it in the hallway, kitchen, or storage area — somewhere between the FritzBox and the bad rooms, but still with solid signal from the router.
Tiles, pipes, mirrors, appliances, metal balcony frame — all of that can make the signal worse.
I’d actually map it before moving stuff randomly. Use NetSpot Planning with your floor plan and test a few virtual placements.
The clean answer is cable + access point.
@Silent_Pulse Ok, this makes sense. I think I placed the repeater where I needed Wi-Fi, not where the repeater itself still had good Wi-Fi.
