Hi, here is the setup: my main router is in one room, and I have a Wi-Fi repeater in my den. I hooked my PC up to this extender using a regular LAN cable.
Lately, my net has been straight trash — the ping in games is bouncing all over the place, and pages barely load. The hardware is ancient, so I think it’s time to chuck it in the bin and grab something fresh.
Any recs for budget-friendly options or alternatives? Running a cord through the whole house from the main router is a hard no; my wife would absolute murder me for cables on the floor. So, I’m gonna need an extender or some similar setup.
Listen, buying a new extender is a terrible idea. Maybe we should first figure out why the current setup is lagging?

There’s excellent software for this called NetSpot. Since you’re using a PC connected to the extender, it’s ideal for free diagnostics. There’s an “Inspector” mode. Enable it, and it will provide you with a detailed table of all the networks around you. Check the signal level and noise graph tab to see if there’s interference from neighboring networks. Sometimes, it’s enough to simply go into the old router’s settings and manually change the channel to a clear one. If everything is fine, run a survey and check for dead zones; perhaps it’s time to move the access point.
