I’ve got a weird WiFi problem that’s slowly driving me insane.
We use an eero mesh setup. Main eero is downstairs by the modem, second one is upstairs near my room.
During the day everything is mostly fine, but later in the afternoon/evening the upstairs connection starts getting noticeably worse.
Gaming ping starts jumping around, Discord gets choppy, sometimes pages hang for a few seconds. If I tab out of the game for a bit it feels like the ping settles down, but obviously that’s not exactly a fix.
The annoying part is that the internet downstairs seems okay.
The upstairs eero is wireless, no Ethernet backhaul.
If it turns out to be only upstairs, check the RF environment at the time it actually happens. use NetSpot for this kind of thing. Look at the band/BSSID you’re connected to, signal level, and the nearby networks around the same channels. I’d compare it once when things are good and again in the evening when the ping starts going nuts. If a bunch of stronger neighboring networks suddenly show up around you at night, that’s a much better clue than just saying “WiFi gets worse after dinner”.
@ShadowBoxer_88 That makes sense. I’ve only really been testing from my room, so I haven’t actually checked downstairs at the exact same time the problem is happening. The upstairs eero is also sitting in the far corner of the hallway because that’s where the outlet is.
That placement would be the next thing I’d question. A wireless mesh node needs a decent connection back to the main unit first. If you put it way out near the edge of the original WiFi coverage, it isn’t creating good internet out of thin air. It’s just rebroadcasting whatever connection it managed to receive. Try moving it a few feet closer toward the main eero and see if the behavior changes.
