Bit of a dumb mounting question.
I’m planning to use a TP-Link Omada EAP773 in the hallway, but getting Ethernet into the ceiling there is going to be a pain. Wall mounting it would be much easier.
Am I likely to lose a lot of coverage if I mount it vertically on the wall instead of flat on the ceiling?
House is single story and I’m mostly trying to get solid 5/6 GHz into the rooms around the hallway.
You don’t really “lose” the signal, you rotate the antenna pattern. Those ceiling APs aren’t perfect little RF spheres. Mounting one 90° from the orientation it was designed around changes where the stronger and weaker parts of the pattern end up. Could work perfectly fine. Could also make one side of the house great and another weirdly weak.
You can get a decent idea before mounting anything too. NetSpot Planning has a library of actual AP models, so you can drop the EAP773 onto your floor plan instead of simulating some generic access point. You can also play with placement and antenna parameters/angles and see how the predicted coverage changes. Pretty useful for exactly this sort of “this spot is convenient, but is it actually stupid?” question. Just model both positions and compare the 5/6 GHz heatmaps.

@Router.overlord Maybe they added it recently. I’m on NetSpot 6 and it’s definitely there.
