Gigabit uplink bottlenecks over Wi-Fi. How to overclock a wireless link?

Yo, I’m losing my mind with this Wi-Fi. I recently upgraded to gigabit fiber, but my wireless speeds are nowhere close. In the bedroom I’m getting around 40–60 Mbps, and even near the gateway the speed jumps all over the place. Sometimes it’s fine, then five minutes later Zoom starts freezing and my ping in Valorant goes crazy.

I’ve rebooted the gateway a bunch of times, but it only helps for a little while, if at all.

Separate internet and Wi-Fi issues. Run a wired speed test if you can. Plug a laptop directly into the gateway with Ethernet and test there. If wired is close to gigabit, your fiber is probably fine and the issue is the wireless side. If wired is also bad, then you need to talk to the ISP.

I would recommend paying attention to the radio environment. Wi-Fi is invisible, so using a Wi-Fi analyzer like NetSpot is very helpful, as it can show you what band you’re using, the signal strength, nearby networks, and which channels are congested. If possible, try switching to 5 GHz or 6 GHz if your router and devices support this band. 2.4 GHz has a longer range, but it’s usually overcrowded in apartments. Also, check whether your router is using wide channels in a congested area.

For gaming, the best solution remains the same: connect everything that’s stationary via cable.

This is really useful. I thought that since the plan is new and fiber-optic, fast Wi-Fi would be available everywhere. But that’s clearly not how it works.
