High ping in Wi-Fi games: how to eliminate lag and latency spikes?
Internet speed tests show it’s fine, but my ping is constantly jumping and freezing when playing games. A cable connection isn’t working.

Stop looking at download speed like it means anything for gaming. Gaming cares way more about latency, jitter, and packet loss than “wow nice, 300 Mbps”. Your WiFi can be fast and still feel terrible in games.
If you’re on 2.4 GHz, that’s usually the first place I’d look. That band gets crowded fast. So before changing ten router settings, I’d check whether you can move the gaming device to 5 GHz and whether the channel situation around you is a mess.
@MacStuckInTheMud Makes sense. I had a feeling this was more of a “stability” problem than a speed problem. Is there a good way to check the reason the ping keeps jumping?
That’s right: even with a strong signal, an interference-clogged airwaves can make gaming a nightmare. If your PC is in an area with radio noise (neighbors, Bluetooth, microwaves), ping fluctuations are inevitable.Using tools like NetSpot allows you to see where the airwaves are clearer. Instead of randomly changing router settings, it’s better to first conduct a network audit. So, check what band you’re on, see how crowded the channels are, test different spots if possible, then mess with router settings only after you know what the air actually looks like
@Ok-Organization-58 Got it, thx. I’ll try it today.
