Internet keeps disconnecting every time I start a heavy download

Yo everyone, I need help. My internet keeps dropping out, especially when I’m trying to download something big. It’ll download at full speed for about 30 seconds, and then — bam — the entire connection is gone. It’s not just the download, but the Wi-Fi icon in the taskbar says “No Internet”.

I checked my phone and Xbox, and they’re working fine, so it’s definitely my computer. I’m not even that far from the router. I’ve tried the most basic things, like “forgetting” the network and turning the router off and on again, but nothing helps. Has anyone else experienced this? It feels like my network card just gives up when it needs to work. Help!

A typical Windows power-saving error. Go to Device Manager, find your wireless network card, and go to Properties. There’s a “Power Management” tab — uncheck the box that allows the computer to turn off the device to save power. Windows thinks it’s being “green”, but it’s actually overloading your card because it can’t handle the heat generated by downloading large amounts of data. Also, if you want to check if your signal is truly poor, just run NetSpot. It’s a Wi-Fi analysis app. It’s a very useful app for identifying problems with your network.

Oh, come on, don’t worry about it. Just order a cheap Wi-Fi adapter from Amazon for about 15 bucks and forget about the problem. I spent like three days trying to fix drivers once and it turned out to be a $10 hardware fix. Don’t overthink it.

Another tip: check your frequency. If you’re using 5 GHz, try switching to 2.4 GHz in your adapter settings. 5 GHz is a fast frequency, but it’s incredibly vulnerable — sometimes a single large packet stream can cause driver crashes. Use wifi-channel-scanner (NetSpot is a good choice) to check the signal-to-noise ratio. If there’s too much interference, your card is overloaded. This is a lifesaver when troubleshooting these types of issues.

Lmao Windows just being Windows. Have you tried a full Network Reset in the settings? It’s the “nuclear option” but it clears out all the garbage cache that builds up after updates. Warning: you’ll have to re-type all your Wi-Fi passwords. Also, are you using a VPN? Some of them have a “kill switch” that triggers if your speed fluctuates too much during a download. Might be worth checking.

I think I fixed it! I unchecked the power saving mode box, and it got a little better. I also changed the channel (NetSpot showed that my router was interfering with a neighbor’s powerful network). It turned out that one of the antennas on the back of my computer was loose. I tightened it (I feel stupid, but it helped). Result: I downloaded a 60GB game and haven’t had a single dropout. Thanks everyone!
