I’ve got a single-story house, around 1700 sq ft, and my WiFi has been getting progressively worse.
The main issue is my Ring cameras. The one by the front door is mostly fine, but the backyard camera keeps disconnecting or taking forever to load live view.
My phone also loses WiFi when I go out to the patio, which is maybe 35-40 feet from the router.
I’m using an older ASUS AC router with about 20 wireless devices connected. Nothing fancy. It was fine for years, but apparently my house has decided WiFi is optional now.
Was looking at newer routers, but everyone keeps telling me to get a mesh system.
Do I seriously need 3 mesh nodes for a 1700 sq ft house just to keep two cameras online?
I’d rather not spend $500 fixing something that might not even be the router.
No, you don’t automatically need a 3-pack mesh because your house is 1700 sq ft. Where’s the router? And what are the exterior walls made of?
@AutoPilot_2012 Router is in the living room, closer to the front of the house. Pretty standard construction. Drywall, insulation, vinyl siding. Backyard camera is on the opposite end of the house.
So you’re trying to get WiFi through the entire house and then through an exterior wall. That explains a lot more than the square footage.
What RSSI does the Ring app show for the cameras? Those things can be annoyingly picky about WiFi.
I’d check the actual coverage. NetSpot is pretty decent for this. Walk around the house and out to the patio, see where the signal starts dropping off.
@ProGrammer-x15 I’ll give NetSpot a try. Never actually measured the signal outside before.
