Hey guys, So here’s the deal: I’m on a 300 Mbps fiber plan. My ISP’s ONT is on the ground floor, and my standalone router used to sit right next to it. Wi-Fi speeds were never mind-blowing, but I’d usually pull around 240–280 Mbps.
Today I moved just the router down to the basement to fix some dead zones. The ONT stayed put. I ran a longer Ethernet cable between them and hooked everything up exactly the same way.
Now I’m completely stumped. When I run a speed test on the ground floor near the ONT, I’m barely getting 120–150 Mbps. But when I head down to the basement right next to the router, I get full line speed again — around 270–290 Mbps.
Did moving the router somehow tank the ONT’s Wi-Fi? Any ideas?
Are the ONT and the router broadcasting the same Wi-Fi name?
Moving the router shouldn’t magically weaken the ONT’s own Wi-Fi if the ONT didn’t move. Use NetSpot or another Wi-Fi analyzer and check the BSSID/MAC, band, channel, and signal level. Don’t just look at the SSID name. The BSSID will tell you which actual radio you’re connected to. If both devices are using similar names, this gets confusing fast.
Wait, does your ONT even have built-in Wi-Fi? Standard ONTs are just bridge devices (dumb modems) with zero wireless capabilities. If your standalone router is in the basement now, that’s your only Wi-Fi source. When you test on the ground floor, your signal is fighting its way up through a thick basement ceiling/floor. That’s why your speed gets cut in half (120-150 Mbps). If your ONT does have Wi-Fi (a gateway combo) and you didn’t disable it, you’re likely experiencing double NAT and massive channel interference. Put the ONT in bridge mode ASAP.
You’re 100% tripping on a “sticky client” issue. Your phone is still hooked to the router down in the basement when you’re standing on the ground floor. If you want to see exactly what’s happening, fire up NetSpot on your laptop and look at the BSSID you’re connected to while upstairs. I bet you’ll see your device stubbornly clinging to the weak basement signal with a terrible dBm level instead of switching over. Try toggling your Wi-Fi off and on.
